What is the Pro Bono Program? |
| |
The Indian River County Bar Association is pleased to work with The 19th Judicial Circuit Pro Bono Committee and the administrator of its Pro Bono program, Florida Rural Legal Services, Inc. (FRLS) to assist eligible clients living within our community with certain types of legal problems. |
| |
|
| |
FRLS is a non-profit organization that provides free legal services both in house and through its Pro Bono program in an attempt to assist eligible clients with certain type of legal problems within our community. Through its client screener, FRLS screens potential clients to determine their eligibility based upon federally mandated poverty guidelines and the nature of the potential client's claim. Should the potential client satisfy the eligibility requirements, the client is then referred to a volunteer Pro Bono Liaison for Pro Bono legal services. The Pro Bono Liaison serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Indian River County Bar Association. Upon receipt of a file from FRLS, the Pro Bono Liaison reviews the file and discusses the case with private attorneys within the Indian River County Bar Association who have volunteered their time to represent
clients free of charge. |

|
| |
This service is called "Pro Bono". All of the time incurred by the attorney is provided gratuitously (at no charge to the client or FRLS). FRLS reimburses the attorney for litigation expenses and pays for malpractice insurance for the file being handled through this program. Many times, however, the Indian River County Bar Association's member agrees to waive cost reimbursement and absorbs all litigation costs associated with representing the client gratuitously.
