  Mediation News and Information

The purpose of this website link is to provide association members with late-breaking news and general information about mediation, a.k.a., dispute resolution.

        What is Mediation?

  • Mediation explores options for dispute resolution that meet the mutual needs of the participants and respond to their own sense of fairness.
  • Mediation proceedings are confidential, avoiding public disclosure of personal problems.
  • In mediation there is no determination of facts, guilt, liability or fault.  The mediator is not a judge; decisions are made by the parties themselves.
  • Mediation allows disputants to control the decisions that affect their lives.
  • Mediation negotiates peaceful settlements to alleviate anger, pain and revenge.
  • The mediation process promotes communication, cooperation, preservation of relationships and enduring agreements.   The mediation process teaches disputants methods of successful conflict in constructive ways.
  • Participation in mediation is voluntary.

  Florida Academy of Professional Mediators

The Florida Academy of Professional Mediators (FAPM), with the web site, www.tfapm.org, offers three options for lawyers who are seeking the services of dispute resolution practitioners.

First, the site offers lists of certified mediators, who are members of the FAPM, by judicial circuit. Click on "Mediator List" and select a judicial circuit. All of the member mediators in that circuit appear. Each member mediator has his/her own listing including contact information and areas of expertise.

The second option, "Find A Mediator" allows attorneys to search for a member mediator by name, certification type, areas of expertise and/or judicial circuit.

The third option is for those individuals who are not familiar with the geographical coverage of a particular judicial circuit. Click on "Circuit Map" for a Florida map. There you can click on an area of interest in the map and obtain the same information. Member mediators appearing at the top of the listings have enhanced biographical information with photographs and more detailed backgrounds. There is no fee for accessing this information.

The Florida Academy of Professional Mediators, also known as The Academy, PO Box 488, Archer, FL 32618, offers lawyers assistance in their search for professional dispute resolution services. If you have any questions, additional information is available at mediatorg@aol.com or 1-800-808-8494.
